Roll Banner Visibility Tips And Tricks!

Did you know that in most cases, the more visible your banner is from distance, the better it is for your visibility?

You must always ask yourself, “How far away will the banner be from the viewer?”

For instance, if your banners will be on the front of a stage or at a radio remote, the banner design must be large enough to be viewed by the audience beyond the front row. Also keep in mind that the viewer may be walking by and will need to distinguish your message while in motion.

How Many Roll Banners Do You Need?

When looking to order plastic roll banners, always remember that the size of the run makes a big impact on your bottom line. Generally speaking, the smallest run length that will still justify the run is 3,000 linear feet.

Behind the 3,000 feet figure for a minimum run is a simple equation that justifies our ‘hands-on’ set up time. Set up time to mount printing plates, install PMS matched inks, un-mount plates and clean up the press, hoses and ink stations stack up to thirty minutes per spot color. With the press running at approximately 450-500’ per minute, the minimum print run is 3,000 feet or 6-8 minutes of press time.

That means that unless you need upwards of 1,000 banners, you’ll get much better bang for you buck if you go for vinyl roll banners. Plastic roll banners are flexographically printed on low density poly, whereas vinyl roll banners are digitally printed on 10 ounce vinyl. A minimum print run for vinyl roll banners, by contrast, is just 50′!

Full Bleeds, Halloween Costumes, And Plastic Roll Banners

With all the vampires, werewolves, shifters and fairies lurking in the shadows in the advent of Halloween, you would be justified for thinking that Full Bleeds is just another reference to blood-suckers and Halloween horrors.

But at Northcoast Banners, full bleeds has a markedly different connotation.

Here’s how it works. Ideally, your banners should set the content fully inside a white margin, or, inside the ‘live area.’  The gap remains between the live area, or the edge of the printing plate and the edge of the poly (at the web) or the plate gap (at the repeat). We prefer 1/2” to ¾” gap on all sides of your roll banner design.

When design flaws occur with design elements protruding into the margin beyond the live area, we will work with the designer to eliminate the flaw.

‘Full bleeds,’ therefore, is a reference to designs that require no gap between instances of banners, or no white margin on all four sides.

At Northcoast Banners, we print full bleeds on a case-by-case basis. When you submit your artwork, we will trim the outer edges of roll banners by allowing for at least 1” of margin space to ensure a safe and accurate trim that will elegantly complete your banner.

Significant upfront costs when dealing with 4CP plastic roll banners result in a much longer minimum run than spot colors, in order to cost justify an expensive run. Yet though our minimum run for 4CP banners was once 25,000 linear feet, today, thanks to the steady pace of technological development we can now print runs of 4CP plastic roll banners as short as 10,000 linear feet.

How We Handle Full Bleeds In Roll Banners

At Northcoast Banners, we print full bleeds on a case-by-case basis. When you submit your artwork, we will trim the outer edges of roll banners by allowing for at least 1” of margin space to ensure a safe and accurate trim that will elegantly complete your banner.

It is important to note that flexo presses to do not allow for continuous print. Now, because of the way that plates mount on the cylinder, a gap occurs between the lead and trail edges as they butt together, creating a ‘plate gap.’

Therefore, you should integrate the plate gap in your roll banner instances to compensate for this issue. Using a solid color BUMP plate that is wider than the normal gap fill, the BUMP plate will butt up to the primary design elements and eliminate the appearance of any plate gap fills, making the seam appear as close to invisible as possible.

If your roll banner art involves colors other than white between the images, select a PMS color that will blend well into the background. Also, using our 5th or 6th printing deck, a spot color can be printed to fill the plate gap.

Our experience has indicated that black is the safest color fill in plate gaps. Although we have successfully created full bleed roll banners with bump plates that were not black, black is by far the safest choice of colors for your bump plate.
